Student Prepared
Student Prepared
Student-prepared food can make your club events more engaging—whether you’re running a bake sale, or serving snacks at a meeting. However, food safety and health regulations must be followed at all times.
Requirements for Student-Prepared Food Events
Before your event:
- Complete the Event Submission form on ookslife.ca.
- Upload food safety certificates for all members handling food.
- Complete the AHS Food Event Registration Form and submit to AHS.
- Be prepared for an inspection—an Alberta Health Services inspector may call with recommendations.
When is Student-Prepared Food Allowed?
Clubs may prepare and serve their own food at events such as:
- Bake sales.
- Popcorn/snack handouts.
- Small private meetings with pre-packaged refreshments.
This is permitted only when:
- The event is on-campus.
- Non-prepacked food is not provided by an external vendor.
- Proper food safety certifications and Event Submission requirements are met.
Food Handling Guidelines
To keep your event safe and sanitary, follow these essential food handling practices:
- All food must be individually wrapped or covered at all times.
- Use gloves when handling food, and sanitize hands before gloving.
- No public contact with food—use designated food handlers only.
- Separate food handling and cash handling roles.
- Serve food with disposable utensils, and keep handles facing customers.
- Long hair must be tied back.
- Only serve food from approved sources.
- Use proper waste disposal: garbage bins for waste, pour liquids into approved drains.
- Maintain safe food temperatures:
- Cold food: below 4°C (39°F).
- Hot food: above 60°C (140°F).
- If requested by AHS, clubs may need to provide a handwashing station—NAITSA Campus Clubs has one available for booking.
The Equipment Staging Area at NAITSA has a sink and cleaning supplies available to sanitize your equipment before or after your event.
Free Food Safety Certification
All student-prepared food events require at least two certified persons per shift. We recommend that as many volunteers as possible complete the course.
How to Get Certified for Free:
- Visit ahs.ca/ephed.
- Go to Online Courses, select “Alberta Food Safety Basics Interactive Course”.
- Click “Register Here” to create an account.
- Follow the email instructions to activate your account.
- Log in and find the course under Catalog.
- Complete the course and quiz (2–3 hours total).
- Download your certificate immediately.
(Note: AHS may delete inactive accounts without warning)
Upload the certificates to your Event Submission form on ookslife.ca.
Bake Sales
Bake sales are a popular and easy way to raise funds or engage the NAIT community—but they come with extra precautions.
Bake Sale Guidelines
- All products must be individually wrapped.
- Dairy products must be kept on ice.
- Display clear signage noting:
- “May contain nuts” or
- “Not made in a nut-free kitchen,” unless you can confirm zero contact with allergens.
